The Deuce
« on: 11 January 2018, 04:55:27 pm »
I know James Franco belongs in the bin with all the other Hollywood abusers, but I watched the first series of this before I found out about what he's done and I'm drawn like a magnet to anything that depicts sex work...

Has anyone else seen it? What did you think?

I have mixed feelings personally. I was disappointed that they didn't seem to be able to show a single sex worker who didn't experience any violence at all and just plodded along, but I do think there was a good mix of characters with different qualities. I know I can set the bar low sometimes so I'd be interested to see if anyone didn't enjoy it and why.

Oh, and Maggie Gyllenhaal's characters 'car salesman' analogy was great!

I've always loathed Franco for some reason, but manage to put my prejudices aside and overall enjoyed it, though couldn't really identify with any of the sex work stuff. Loved some of the pimps though!

I just watched the trailer for 'The Deuce' - looks good and I'll keep it in mind for the future, thanks for bringing it up.

My recommendations regarding sex work would be:
1. American Courtesans: a documentary done by a sex worker and activist
2. Whore's Glory (the theme song 'Whore's glory poem' is brilliant ! ): a documentary showing snippets of lives of sex workers in Thailand, Bangladesh and Mexico; very haunting
3. After Porn Ends (part 1 and 2): a fantastic couple of documentaries.

Have you seen the series 'The Girlfriend experience'?
I managed to go through season 1 and it was utterly depressing  :-\

I watched it all, really enjoyed it actually. But Jesus Christ, I wouldn't have wanted to be doing this in the seventies, or anytime without the freedom of the internet I guess. Giving my money away to a pimp? No thank you! And yes, a lot of violence. Enjoyed the Candy / Eileen story, nice to see she got to where she wanted to be and the director guy seemed to be on her side.
