Yes, I am aware that it’s already implemented in Northern Ireland, so I am referring to England, Scotland and Wales.

Having taken more and more interest in monitoring the sex worker activism as well as public perceptions and media articles about prostitution, I am getting increasingly worried that (1) Nordic model might grow more and more popular and be finally implemented and (2) the sex worker rights groups are either ignored, not asked to provide a balancing arguments or get misrepresented.

I am sick and tired of reading the crap about us, the hysteria, constantly conflating our jobs with human trafficking as well as the whole concept of this being a “job” being mocked and trivialised as “not real”.

How likely do you reckon the NM might get introduced in the rest of the country and why?

I would be surprised if it did get introduced. I don't think we need to worry too much about it for now.

I know there is plenty of talk how we get abused by the clients and pimps force some women to work and MP's, the police and press think it's very common. Being indie we can be more  in control of who we see and how we handle the challenging situations. I do think in some cases there right in how many bad men out there that treat us terrible, have no respect with a hard job this is to invite a stranger inside.

What i would like more highlighted is harsh penalties for abuse and harassment of sex workers just like how people that do racial abuse or homophobic abuse can get in serious trouble now days that would be great to have something like that for us. Might stop more of us having to deal with daily shit from some men that think we are just a easy target.

The people behind this are very organised and have deep pockets. I fear the current government is in bed too deeply with them. There's official reports on this from European Council of Ministers censure to ILGA and others. They have stalled promised progress on UN women's rights obligations. I'm concerned there may be too much sympathy in government for the tradwife/anti-sex worker/abortionist model. Disabled people and the unemployed and poor have been thrown under the bus which isn't a good sign either.

I don't know if they will be successful as there is a lot of pushback but I find the overall trend worrying. Under this government survival sex has gone up and they seem to enjoy punishing people twice.

In my city politicians with an agenda (not just the right but the left) have pulled out all the tropes about violence against women to try and close down strip clubs. The new police commissioner is calling for more centralisation by giving these powers to government and is calling for bringing in national ban. None of the arguments such as create decent jobs so women have a choice or strip clubs are safer than night club venues cuts any ice with them. They are saying if a ban comes into force they will have to help with an "exit strategy". Oh, really? We all know that so-called exit strategy is piecrust promises. We know when strip clubs go down they are coming for other sex workers next.

I hate these smarmy people talking out of both sides of their mouth.

I genuinely hope one day it escalates to a point where the absurdities aren’t taken seriously any longer and there comes a point there are social/legal consequences for messing with us, the same like it’s now the case with minorities (still happens of course but racist/homophobic remarks is pretty much a social and career suicide these days).

Could not agree more. Although i do not agree with the Nordic model there protection against thinking there helping us against predators would be better used to punish the wrong un's that target us for abuse and harassment in the first place rather then every man paying for sex as they are not all bad men just some.

I have been treated better by many clients than people with job titles and professional obligations who have a duty of care! I certainly wish people who did abuse would get done! It all comes from the same place.

Swedish sex workers are not going to the police whenever they get attacked because of the nordic model, you can loose custody of your child and/or they will put a police patrol car infront of your building to arrest your clients which means the end of your business. If this is not a form of abuse please tell me what it is. All this nordic model basically what it does it goes back to the dark ages and pushes the trade under the rug in an effort to stay clandestine. fighting for it wins a lot of brownie points to politicians.

This is a given. You know this, I know this, we all know this… but it doesn’t stop those idiots from pushing this wonder to the public as the best solution. This zealotry combined with ignorant public doesn’t bode well for the future, hence my question.

I suspect there are currently too many men in the commons and lords who would hate to be criminalised. But we mustn't be complacent because the demographics are changing, and the more women who enter parliament the more likely is it that things will get tougher for sex workers. The Nordic countries pride themselves on having equal representation between the sexes and hey presto the Nordic model followed. I don't know what the answer is except to persuade more female MPs that we're not all trafficked. Sorry to not be more positive but I think it may be an issue in the future.

Female PM's have no interest in talking with sex workers or sex activists, they didn't do it when the northern model was implanted in scandinavia. Spain government was recently threatening with the nordic model and the sex workers/activists went out in mass protest. There were not conversations with the sex worker organizations on what is it they want, meaning implanting the nordic model on sex workers was complety unconsensual which is very ironic. Nobody wants to listen to sex worker organizations and their needs/wants.

That's very true Ana, they really don't care about women's safety. It's mostly about getting at men. I've read a few of Julie Bindel's articles, searching for the slightest clue that she respects independent choice for women but she really doesn't seem to at all. In her latest article she said that the only thing prostitutes get from decriminalisation is freedom being arrested. Well, that's quite a big positive in my book!
I have a lot of sympathy for her disgust at the language punters use among themselves when talking about us but let's never imagine that the nordic model is about making our lives easier.
At the end of the day, sex workers are still stigmatised, even by so called feminists.

I think support for the Nordic Model is more of a niche left wing activist kind of thing, I can't imagine this current Tory govt pushing for it. I certainly don't think the man on the street has any strong opinions about it.

I think the British public is quite liberal in that sense, for example it's very rare that you hear an MP in the news talking about abortion, we just don't have that debate the same way as they do in countries like the USA. People aren't interested.

I also note that the last attempt at getting this through in Parliament (Diana Johnson's bill) failed. It didn't even get past the second stage. [link removed - please don't post these here].

The thread has actually been inspired by Bindel who has recently enjoyed the spotlight on a YouTube podcast and ridiculed the sw movement aa “just handing out condoms and a cup of tea” and sw activists as “non representative tourists”. There was zero pushback from the hosts and she wasn’t even called out. The public watches this and I am concerned they’ll just swallow this crap at face value and the public approval for the NM will grow. Remember many people also see our jobs as a vice that shouldn’t exist at all to begin with, so for them any way to eliminate it is good. Whores are in the wrong in the first place, so if this NM pushes them to quit and find “real jobs”, then that’s a good outcome isn’t?

That’s a positive that the latest attempt fell on its face, for now. Sorry to be a doomer, but the scenario is still looming given they have succeeded in NI.

Lol The attitude towards SW in the USA is amusing and annoying at the same time, I haven’t seen this much ignorance and bigotry towards us than over there, especially in the southern states. I sometimes read even yank twitter accounts and the comments, it’s astonishing.. I feel sorry for sex workers over there. And one might think that sex work being a thriving industry despite over 100 years of criminalisation would be a clue to evaluate something that clearly failed but no…   :FF

My guess is a Labour majority government might try and push it through, but a Tory government won't.
