Has anyone taken self defence classes?
« on: 12 December 2015, 06:22:01 pm »
Hi Ladies

Not sure if this is the right section for this question but after having a few close calls recently I have been wondering if anyone had taken any kind of self defence class and if so what type and any recommendations in the south east?

Thanks in advance!

I only took a one day self defence class at my university it was free I think.I don't really know of any places just google self defence classes for women (your city) but tbh I have forgotten everything so I suggest to take them at least for 2 months and several days a week so that you get solid knowledge. One day class was useless imo
why have cotton when you can have silk???

Yes though it was before I ever started escorting. I've never been worried about getting hurt but it did a lot for my self confidence just to know if something did happen I have some ways to try to get out a bad situation. You should look at classes that teach you to make a person let go of you, restrain or techniques that take a person off balance. I'd never win a fight with anyone but if I can knock them off or stun them I can get myself out of the situation and get help. Martial Arts classes like Karate and Kickboxing etc and the like won't be of much use.

I have done self defence classes too, I did them over several weeks I found them really helpful, I was in the club the other night and some guy came up and grabbed me, all those moves came flooding back to me lol

Following an armed robbery I took up a defensive martial art, and have moved onto a seocd. Both taught me escapes from many holds, punches and kicks, standing and lying. Both also work on getting your attacker off balance/off their centre line. Using their own energy against them, as well as teaching control and focus.

Great advice - I box a few times a week but I'm in agreement about how useless it would be in regards to self defence. It gives me strength and I've a mean left hook, but it's only for fitness purposes really. The techniques described above are spot on me thinks  ;D

Yes Ive done them  few times over the years

Like most of us women we would never win a physical fight with a man (as a rule ) but knowing how to punch properly and for a women the palm of your hand flat out to hit in the face ( so Palm facing the face ) is far far more effective than trying to punch a bloke if you don't know how to make a fist properly you will end up breaking your thumb in the process ( yes I've broken my thumb  ;D)

But hitting direct with your palm is enough to break a nose with not much pressure or power

Like wise trying to use a weapon like a base ball bat isn't advisable as its more likely to be used on you instead

Biting the nose is probably the best place to bite someone it's seriously painful rather Than going for the balls

Classes that teach you how to get out of arm locks/being  restrained  by using your own body weight is what I would be looking for

I have been attacked since I was a child and despite always being cautious, I had rape attempts even during the day in the middle of the campus.  I guess my anger led me to starting boxing, kick boxing and doing Krav Maga.  Thankfully, in London there are several discount sites where you find reduced classes you can join and learn how to protect yourself.

Hi ladies

I just started a Krav Maga based self Defence 4 week course and I'd highly recommend it. I particularly enjoy it as the training is contact based i.e. The instructor gets padded up and you "let rip" (so to speak) so you are as close to an environment where you really have to fight back and protect yourself.

The one I'm doing is through Krav Maga Scotland but there are lots of other institutions throughout the UK.

I'd hope I'd never need to use it but the techniques are easy to learn and something all ladies of all fitness abilities could do.

Do you think if you became skilled at it, it would help you protect yourself from men who are a lot stronger physically? I am genuinely interested x

Well I learned how to break a nose with my palm of my hand without hurting my own today so that's helpful!  ;D

It obviously depends on the situation and circumstances, in saying that, even in a non WG scenario, just learning that today makes me feel a little safer, even if I was at the bus stop with some arsehole getting wide with me.

I'm a big girl though (size 22/24) so I'm not easily pushed around. Literally.  ;D

Oh it definately has. Even just that one technique - which I didn't know about - just might help me one day.

That was my second hour of training and I loved it so much I'm looking to taking it up as hobby/means of exercising.

My father taught me some of the basics when I was old enough to date.  My dad was strong and fit and able to move out of the way fast enough but he taught me the eye gouge, the nose push (shove up from under hard enough to break it) and of course the crotch grab or kick.  I'd use any of them if I needed to.  I think practicing is key for muscle memory--that way if you are in a moment of danger you are more likely to react quickly.
