Title: Hair?
Post by: Adamas on 13 April 2011, 10:01:37 pm
I have long straight hair. Really straight. I was never taught how to do anything with it, and haven't had much opportunity to learn as an adult.  I can manage a curling iron with good results, but the process is probably not a pretty sight.  ::)

I don't mind keeping it down for the occasional booking, but I've got a booking this Saturday and the gentleman has requested a certain look and  though he didn't mention hair, I imagine it will be expected that it will be "done".

I'm not sure what to do though. Any suggestions? Does anyone have any fairly simple ideas for the inept? I cannot even braid my own hair. It would be nice if I didn't have to slave away over a hot curling iron for over 1-2 hours every time I want my hair to look really nice or different.

Thanks, ladies.

The way I see it the gentlemen would have seen your pics and how your hair was.. so I'd say dont stress over it

In terms of quick ways to do your hair. Get a big hair clip and practise twisting it up..hmm this is hard too explain in text lol The way to get away with it is clip it up nice and smart and in those first few moments of the booking, after you get the formalities over, undo your clip and shake your hair free in a sexy way lol guys love that and then you dont have too worry about your hair and you'll appear confident and relaxed.. hopefully  :D

Fridays idea is a really good one. It's not hard to do like that, I have chin length hair but sometimes if it is long enough I do a rather pathetic wispy haired version of what she describes. Basically just take your hair up in a high ponytail and then lift the ponytail up to the top of your head and secure with the big clip. If you want it to look a bit sexy and mussed up you can pull individual, random strands down here and there. :)

I think the fabric flower hair pieces that are popular at the moment can look lovely as well. Just clip one into your hair when it's all piled up and I'm sure that will look really nice.

But also as Friday says guys clearly like your hair as it is or they wouldn't want to see you. Therefore I don't think you need to stress unduly. I would love hair thick enough to grow long, I have such fine hair I look almost bald if I grow it past my shoulders :'(

I have no idea what to do with hair, so I do the clip thing too. Doing it without a hairband is nice so you can let it down in one go like Friday suggested, but personally my hair will only stay like that for about 10 minutes so I'd need to go with the hairband option if I was going to spend some time with my hair up. Spend some time trying it out.

I agree with Simone about using clips/slides to dress up your hair. I wear them on one side like this (http://allgirltogaparty.co.uk/gallery/escort2/), which takes no special skill or fashion sense. I recommend trying them on in the shop though, because some have weird backings that aren't much use and you may not recognise them for their uselessness.

(I was also trying out hairsticks during that shoot, but my hair is soft and slippery so it just slipped out which you can see in some of the photos. They look cool though, so if you're feeling a bit more adventurous you could check the internet for technique and try it out with some chopsticks or pencils.)

I was lucky that I did a brief couple of lessons in wigs at college so learnt some ways too do hair but mainly ive experimented as ive gone. I work long days on cam, there's no way my hair would stay nice all day so i have to put it up but with practise there is so many different looks you can get. Pop down to your local "pound store" and pick up some hair bits and have a play  :)

Thank you for the great suggestions, everyone. I will have a look around for some good bits and have a play.

My hair is thick and I can rarely get clips to hold it all up, which makes it frustrating trying to use them. I love the idea of just putting it up long enough to let it loose at the start of the booking, especially if it makes me look more confident and relaxed! Thanks, Friday!

Simone- I have to say that I love your hair! It's really lovely  :)  I think I have tried the ponytail thing before, I like the look but find, like Anika, that it doesn't stay in very long. Grr.

Anika- Your hair looks a lot like mine, thanks for your recommendations.

Clips hold my hair fine as long as I do a ponytail first; I'd be surprised if it couldn't work for you since as I said my hair is quite slippery. It might be the way you're doing it; you want to make the ponytail tight, and twist the hair before you put it in a clip. Also if your hair is thick you might find most clips too small, though that should just mean that you can't get it all in, not that it slips out.

If you've got long hair and nice simple yet classy look would be a semi high bun which you'd be able to do yourself with having to stress about styles looks etcx

I do lots with my hair, which is long and thick.

If it is long enough, a hair bow is fun.  Put in a high pony but do not pull it all the way through, so that you have a loop rather than a tail.  Split in half and tuck the end over the top = hair bow

Big bun is also fun.  Put in a pony, backcomb, twist and stick hairpins to secure

Half up is nice too.  Take the front bit of the hair, twist, push up for volume and secure with claw clip.

Sometimes I use 'bumpits' if I want a beehive style and don't want to kill my hair with backcombing

If you want curls, pin curls are time consuming but quite easy.  Take 1" sections of damp hair, form into circle, pin to head with 2 kirbys.  Leave to dry overnight, remove pins to get big round curls

Or if your really lazy like me use hair pieces for instant glam! My hair is long but I'm so lazy so I tie the top half into a pony then clip on a 'glam' or ' chic' hairpiece from ' hot hair',  they are fab and feel secure. Instant goddess hair!  :-* x

If you're going to do an 'up-do', wash your hair the day before. Freshly washed hair is too slippery and won't hold anything properly. Also, a wee bit of back combing helps to keep grips and clips in place.

dry shampoo, like batiste,  is good too for making slippery,  freshly washed hair more manageable for styling. Just make sure you rub it in so it doesnt stay looking powdery. They do a special dark hair one now too so it doesn't make dark hair look white.

Boots do a spongy, meshy er.. thingy! Called a hair donut.

You can use it long and sausage-like to make a french pleat-just wrap your hair over it( ie left to right), then secure with kirby grips and pull loose to look suitably dishevelled  :D
Or, for a more formal 'lady-boss' look, attach both ends with the presstud and place it around your ponytail, wind the hair around the bun shape and secure with grips et voila! - a classy chignon  :)

Warning, these work well in my own hair which is quite fine and shoulder length, but probably won't hold up long thick hair..

When I'm unsure about a beauty/hair tip, I have a look on youtube which have a fair few examples of what to do with all different kinda hair  :D

I have the opposite problem to you, Adamas, in that my hair is very curly and takes bloody ages to straighten- and isn't actually straight when it's done- and chemical relaxers were just a disaster, so I never bother. I'm considering wigs, I don't know whether to go for the red headed Rihanna look (the straight look, rather than the long 'fro which I have naturally anyway) or the Nicki Minaj/Lady Gaga look. I could rock both, I suppose.

I know that particular shade of red suits me as I've died it that colour in the past, but trying to work out what shade of blonde to go for is a pain. I'm having to wade through lots of stuff about "cool" and "warm" skin tones, spring and autumn skin tones etc, but have settled for a honey blonde.

A friend of mine takes to wearing weaves (http://www.weaves.co.uk/guide-to-hair-weaves/) when she wants a change; synthetic hair holds the curl much better than natural, but you have to make sure you're getting good quality stuff and it doesn't last as long as natural hair, and you'll need to have some hair of your own to attach it to in the first place. The upside though is it can't be pulled off like a wig and won't slide about.

My hair colour varies from red to blonde and every shade in between. My last photoshoot before Christmas shows dark red hair, but it is now a bit lighter with highlights. I just had a client who wants to make a 2 day booking (waiting for deposit this week so might not be gen). His last email asked if my hair could be blonde for our date!  :o

Loulou

I leave half of my own hair down (as it's bra strap length anyway ) and clip the glam hair to my half head pony so the two mix together, so if hair not clean it won't really show!

I stick to one or two styles since my hair is long and thick, also guys love the colour and length so silly to tie it all all. I simply clip the front section back so it's off my face. Occasionally I will clip it all up at the back, but that is very rare. I also never use heated appliances, since in my opinion they cause damage - plus mine goes frizzy if you try to use even the gentlest hair dryer.

I'm a wash, clip and go girl and that's it. I wouldn't apply colour or heat for a specific booking, I like to keep my hair in good condition. Not to mention other clients who could be a little upset when he turns up to find your hair is not the colour/type in your photos.

I've only ever used fancy dress wigs, but with those I use a stocking to cover my hair and then 20+ hair grips through everything. That holds it quite well but it's still worth positioning it a bit lower than I want it to allow for movement.

The whole thing is a bit of a pain though (especially getting it off) and I wouldn't want to do it whenever I went on cam.

Ooooh thanks for the hair-pins tip. I will try that to stop it from sliding back and making me look dome-headed with multi-coloured hair. Might see if just a couple of pins would do the job to reduce the time consuming aspect. I would have got fancy-dress ones too if it was just webcam but I need it to look as natural as possible for real life bookings.

I generally work in "blocks" of 5-8 hours a day, so I just put it on at the start of work and off when I'm going home. I'd be driven crazy if I had to keep putting it on and taking it off all day though!

I'd be using lots of grips for real life meetings (unless just massage) and can't imagine how you've managed without any, but actually yes a couple should be fine for webcamming. When I wear wigs I'm liable to really test the grip (riding a bike, upside down pole tricks), so I need to know that it'll stay put whatever happens.

Oh and for me I think the stocking is necessary to keep the wig in place (I don't know if you're using one), but I have slippery hair so it's probably not essential for everyone.

Oh yeah, forgot you'd mentioned wig caps.

I haven't done cam in a while, but maybe I should bring out the wigs if I feel up to it but the weather's a bit cool. They're great for keeping warm :). That's the main reason I wore one on the naked bike ride.
