Give him the number for Samaritans and suggest they might be a more appropriate place to explore his feelings about abuse.

I am ill at the moment. I told this guy I couldn't see him as I have come down with a viral infection which has wiped me out (yes, they joys of kissing men)...he said he still wants to see me and will pay for my time.

Yes he's using you as a therapist when he should be paying for a counsellor. He either doesn't have your best interests at heart or extremely poor social skills. This situation will drain you at best never mind the virus, that's a double whammy. Fixated on himself & his issues by pestering you with it all.
I had a client tell me he went up to the local suicide spot & he's since dissapeard off AW & not heard from him for months, I do wonder if he's OK but it's not our job to help these men with their mental health.
