Hot yoga...
« on: 27 May 2011, 12:43:47 am »
Err well I realize this is rather off topic but it DOES have to do with keeping in shape for my clients :)

I've put on a few pounds over the last little while and I'm trying to get back in shape. Today I signed up for hot yoga as I've heard lots about the benefits (I also do lots of other exercise). So I did my first class, and for the first 30 minutes I was feeling good and normal and happy that I'd decided to go.

Fast forward to 60 minutes in and I'm starting to panic a whole lot. The heat is getting too much and I'm feeling dizzy, nauseous, and extremely anxious. I thought I was going to have a panic attack so I laid down and avoided movement. I really wanted to get up and go outside into the cool air but it's against the rules 'cause it distracts the other participants (which I understand but seriously, I think if you feel like you are going to die you should be allowed to leave?). I was bawling my eyes out with frustration and wanting to leave so badly.

Afterwards I felt ok...I feel the need to keep going. I've been told it will get easier, but it's hard to believe that. Has anyone else here taken hot yoga that can testify for it getting easier as you keep going? Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated...

xx Brooklyn

Lol I haven't been for those exact reasons. I have a friend who went every day for 10 days (due to an introductory special offer,) and she said by the 3rd/4th time she was ok and had started to notice a difference in how her clothes fitted x

I tried it once and had similar feelings to you. I haven't been back to give it another go as I can't decide if I liked the feelings or not  ::)

Is that Bikram Yoga?  I went a few times years ago and I loved it but I was young then and now that I'm older the thought of all that heavy breathing in such a hot environment (lol I didn't even mean that to be a pun) with so many people in the room just makes me think I'm going to breathe in about 16 trillion germs so I don't know if I could go again!

I do remember the first time I went to a class, I went home and got in the shower and my legs kept giving way but I had such a great sleep that night.   :)

So I think it will get easier the way exercise in general does get easier.  At least you'll know what to expect if you go again and kind of prepare yourself and if you feel the same way then don't go back. x

Hi Brooklyn

I had exactly the same thing, but my instructor was pretty good, and said that for ones first few sessions you should actually be sitting out whenever the heat and intensity gets too much, up to a half of the session, so my first few were spent a lot just sitting on the mat breathing slowly.

I havent been for a while but really want to get back into it.  They say if you do Bikram (hot) yoga for 60 days it will change your 'body, mind & life' - so I am well up for that, also having put on a bit of weight recently.  A friend of mine is an instructor, and says probably better to build up to a certain level of being used to the heat before starting the 60 day challenge.  I found this article on it brilliant:
