currency: 100s and 50s versus 10s and 20s

Which one do you like more? 100s are ok as they dont take up much room, but at the same time its so hard to break them...then you risk wandering around with big bills and no one willing to take them.

Small bills are easier to break, but at the same time they take up so much room...And its really showy when they are just bulging out.

I know we dont have a choice, but do you get happier over one than the other? Or a combination of both!

We don't have 100s here. We have 5, 10, 20, 50.

I get almost everything in 20s, which is good. Ok in shops and not too much to count for most jobs. 50s are good when I get them since they're efficient and can go straight to the bank (although I don't like ending up with an odd number, for anal retentive reasons). Occasionally someone will get all 10s from a cashpoint, which is a bit of a nuisance at the time, but it's nice to have a supply of 10s for minor spending. When I get a few 5s it feels like christmas.

A client was talking to me last night about how you can get 500 euro notes, which I think sounds brilliant. You could pay your rent with one or two bills!

However, here in England (Joey, 50s are the biggest note here), I never like to pay for anything with a ?50 note. They are so pink and conspicuous! And the cashier ALWAYS does a test to check if they're fake. Or sometimes just doesn't accept them?

I've been to the US only a couple of times, but both times I got EXTREMELY annoyed with the bloody handfuls of dollar bills I ended up with. And the coins being so silly and having two names each. A pound coin feels nice and spendable but lordy, counting out your dollar bills onto a counter just feels awkward.

Before the Euro (and after the hyperinflation in the Twenties before anyone is cheeky lol) you could get 1000 Mark notes.  I remember when I was working at weekends and in the evenings while at my final years at school, I often would get one of those plus a few notes and would be terrified to lose it, clutching the envelope and immediately nervously rushing to the bank.  Most shops would not normally accept them.

Ah the guilder, I loved those 1000 guilder notes. Plus there was the lovely 50 guilder note that had a lovely sunflower on it. But now we have the euro and I do like the 500 for space reasons, but in Ireland, they have a big problem with anything larger than a 100 for shopping. So, I rarely see 100, 200 or 500 notes. It is all bleeding 50's! Oh and I hate 20's, 10's, and oh lord I can't tell you how many 5's I have thrown away, by accident. They are the same size as a cash receipt, and I often will just fold everything together, and later on will empty my pockets and chuck the receipts in the trash, along with the 5 euro note wrapped up in it.  :o

I just remembered this, my daughter when she was younger( during the guilder times) and was changing teeth, came to me on evening and showed me the newest tooth that had fallen out. So, I said put it under your pillow, and the tooth fairy will leave you something. Well for the life of me I couldn't find any change in the house any where, ok so I said I would put a bill, not a problem there, except there were all 100 guilder bills. I spent about an hour searching for any change, nothing. Ok, so the Tooth Fairy(aka Mom) typed a note saying: "Thanks so much for the tooth, it will make an nice addition to my collection. Since we are in the electronic age now, I have wire transferred 10 guilders to your bank account, please ask you mom to check for it. Love and kisses, and remember to brush well. The Tooth Fairy" She still finds this rather funny, because even now she knows I never have small notes.

Ah yes the Guilders were very pretty and bright. Italain Lira went up to big denominations, the smallest was a stupidly small 1000 Lira IIR and the biggest a ?100k?

yeah... I was about to tell off Violette for that  :D but then today I almost did it  :-X  somewhere along the line shoved a $5 in my pocket and forgot it was there, took off my jeans and about to chuck them and it was all moist and wrapped around a reciept. And dollar bills get brittle when they are exposed to too much moisture.

See, it can happen to anyone. But Hey Joey, US money is all the same size, but the 5 euro is quite small, and it is the same size as the average cash register receipt.

Italian Lire came in big notes but it was more like Monopoly money ? you needed more than a thousand just to buy an ice cream lol.  Think 2,000 lire was less than a Pound.  The Mark and Guilden were worth a lot more so large denomination notes did make you nervous about losing a note.  Before the Euro was introduced, during the Eighties and then Nineties the Pound dropped to around 2.2 or even lower so a single 1000 Mark note was worth more than ?455, which back then was serious money, for some representing their monthly wage.  I have to double check pockets too not to have fivers wrapped around and lost with shop receipts lol.

Glad that the Tooth Fairly these days comes equipped with all sorts of modern communication devices lol
