Title: Constantly bloated after working with Copper Coil
Post by: EllaUnicorn123 on 02 October 2020, 08:51:20 pm
Hey girls!

Just wondering if anyone with the copper Coil IUD has ever experienced prolonged periods of cramping/bloating/minor discomfort? Especially after a few days work :'(
I had the coil inserted in January and didn’t work for a few months. Since I’ve been back to work July September I am constantly bloated and uncomfortable in my lower abdomen. I have had a scan and my coil checked. All good. Also had a full std screening and all good too. I’m wondering if anyone works with the copper coil and also experiences bloating and cramps for a couple weeks after work?

I've had mine years and never had problems. It's very unlikely, but there is a bacteria (Actinomyces) that is harboured on the strings of the IUD, and while it's normally harmless if you develop an infection it can get nasty. If you develop any pain or a temperature I would ask to be checked for that.

I've had the copper IUD, changed every few years and experienced something like that once. It's not normal and you may want to have it checked again by another doctor. The IUD can be fine but the strings may be contaminated after a while.

Yeah I know bv is quite common with the strings but they swabbed for bv/trichomonias ( deffo spelt that wrong) and it was clear. I’m going to give it a month and if it’s still weird it’s coming out! I just wondered if it’s not the best contraception for high volume sex and that’s why it’s painful and bloaty after! Omg I just googled Actinomyces! Lord don’t let me get that  :'(

The IUD was probably the worst mode of contraception i ever tried. Was running back and forth the clinic thinking something was always wrong. One doctor said the strings needed to be cut shorter, the other said it was too far up.Real nightmare.
