Clueless about makeup :/
« on: 28 November 2012, 08:38:42 pm »
This is a little off topic, but I hope that's ok.

I've discovered that I really should have had a sister, as I know nothing about makeup and what to use. My normal approach is just a bit of eye shadow and maybe some lipstick, and day to day, I probably will never wear more than that (unless I really need to lol).

However, I've noticed on webcam that my face can look really shiny and I guess I'm looking for something to even me out a bit. But I've no idea what to buy, or where to start -  there's so many powders and foundations etc and I don't even know what they are intended for.

Could anyone give me a clue of where to start?

I'm the same, I don't really *do* make-up but, for cam I just have to or I look like the living dead. I have an olive skin tone so can look quite sallow in the wrong lighting.

I use some beige-ish foundation and some powder in the same shade. In "Real Life" I look like tango-woman hehe, but on cam it looks fine. I have black eye-liner and then put some darkish lipstick on but wipe most off straight away.

It really helps to have a LOT of good lighting, particularly a lamp right behind cam if you can. I'm doing a spot of cam right now with free preview (and I'm decent!), if you want to come and have a look at my awful attempts at trying to look human. I can PM you a link.

I've spent years practicing with makeup and trying different things to suit me due to facial scars and I'm always on the hunt for new products as I love playing around, so much so I've even looked at make up artistry courses! It's very difficult for someone online to give advise on what would suit you but what I would suggest is going to a large department store and make your way to the make up counters, find someone who you don't think is too overly made up and ask them for their advice. They will give you a make over and give you some useful tips as well as trying to sell you what they have used. You do not have to buy from them though! Then if you're fortunate enough to have the time and resources try out another store, a different provider and keep on going until you feel you have found what you are happy with. Keep on going.

I've often gone into stores for a 'make over' late afternoon before a night out if I've wanted to try a different look! Love it!  8)

I'm in love with mineral powder because it's magic. It's not hardcore e.g. that stuff that's basically wipe-on plastic for photoshoots or video and whatnot, so it might not be right if you want a super-perfect look for being on cam. However, if you're looking for a REALLY simple and minimal (and skin-kind) solution for just a bit of shininess, pop "mineral powder flawless matte" into Google - the first result is the one I use on no-foundation days.

It's white in the pot but goes on colour-less (so no shade matching, woohoo) and just matte-ifies any shine on my face from the generous amounts of moisturiser I always use. It lasts about 6 hours and then I'll either top it up or I'll be home again by then and will therefore no longer give a toss about the texture of my skin. :P

You can order samples from their website, too, so you needn't spend more than a couple of quid if you just want to test it out. Or, of course, there are other mineral makeup brands that you can check out in department stores if you want to compare price etc.

the only make up I ever wear for camming is lipstick and eye make up, the rest is all done by having good strong lighting. Honestly, jeez I WISH I looked that fab in RL.

Try the lighting basic of having a 'key light' and a 'fill light'.

The key light is the main directional light source, the fill light gives extra more diffused lighting and softened everything out. Also what sort of webcam are you using? I have a logitech - and its worth it, if I use the inbuilt cam on my computer I look like crap.

Wow, thanks for the advice girls :)

Emily, I do love the idea of samples, so will have to give that a go.

And Jodie, I didn't know you could request samples of branded stuff - my Mum's always asking for moisturiser samples and stuff, I guess I haven't thought about it too much!

I shall have to go shopping at the weekend!

Oh also look at Mac.
They do tutorial sessions for ?50
which is fully redeemable against Mac products.

I've heard a number of people speak very highly of this.
Though the closest I've ever been to a tutorial, was a natter with the makeup artist
prepping me for my last shoot.  ;D
