Had a client yesterday who paid for his hour and got his hour's worth. After the event, he took the money and divided it into two bundles and said to me 'Spend that half, and put the other half into a savings account for your children'.
Keeping things light-hearted, I asked him who else he thought my money was spent on anyway?! and I went to gather up the money. There then followed a lengthy lecture on how I should save, how I won't be able to do this job forever, and how my kids won't be young forever.
This annoyed me big time. He's a regular, and presumably thinks that gives him the right to pass on the benefit of his advice. Now, advice I can handle; patronising assumptions I can do without!
For example, why the assumption that I don't already have a savings account? Why the assumption that I can't look after my own financial affairs? After all, I'm smart enough to run my own business, do my own marketing/advertising/book-keeping, etc.
Would he tell his gardner or his accountant how to spend their money?
Grrr.
