Bit like when guys ask if you are married or have a boyfriend, whatever you say it's wrong. I wear a ring on my wedding finger - always have done and never been married, no children either.

Yet guys obviously presume.

If you say you have a partner some don't like it, they think hubby will be on the scene/in the background when they arrive. If you say not then some think they've a chance as a boyfriend.
