I've just started reading 'Courtesans' by Katie Hickman which chronicles the lives of five ladies working in the 18th and 19th centuries. Can't put it down! It'll make you wish you born 200 years ago!

You should watch the film version of the Cynthia Payne story - Personal Services - it's absolutely brilliant - lead played by Julie Walters. Think it came out in the 80s some time.

New book!

I really can't rave enough about this book. It's an up to date academic based book that debunks all public policy hype surrounding the sex industry.

Iv found it amazing, plus its teaching me how to be more critical of others arguments (great for final year at uni).

Anyone else reading it?
X

In good company is a good factual read

A book by 'miss s' similar but less glam than secret diary is good

Sex myth by Brooke magnanti is my new fave.

Working by Dolores French is good, though set in the US. It's very real and non hysterical, whic is good! There's two Irish books out that I want to read, one's called between the sheets, and is meant to be great and the other isn't out yet but it's secret diary of a Dublin call girl - though I don't think it's going to be light reading...A Widow for One Year by John Irving (Irvine?) has parts set in Amsterdam, though the mystery in the story surrounds a serial killer who murders prostitutes so don't read it late at night (or at all, though it is a great book)z x

Oh god  don't get me started but I can't stand her  ??? Apparently she was an high-end call girl for 6 months and now she feels entitled to write all these books on the subject? I've tried to read that book and couldn't agree with absolutely anything she said. And I've been 15 years in the industry (meaning: I know a "tad" on the subject). But hey, thank god It's a free country and everybody is entitled to write whatever they please. But then she's had horrible reviews (no wonder). And the belle diaries were a total glamorization of prostitution in a "Pretty woman" sort of way and had very little to do with what this business is all about. Sorry I just can't agree with anything she says (in fact" I think it's total rubbish) and i don't think 6 months as a high end escort gives you the right to become a "sex expert" of any sorts to be honest. 6 months in the business you're still a newbie trying to figure out "what the hell you got yourself into" (lol). If I had written a book after my 6th month in the industry it would have been a load of bull---t, I think it's after some years when you become experienced that you start really knowing this business well and have something to say about it.

Sorry for my bitter rant but I do have issues with the Brooke Magnatis of the world  teaching us about sex er..."myths"

Rant over  ;D

She was actually working for 14 months and she is a writer and doesn't claim all the stories she wrote in her blog to be what actually happened  ;)

Diana I don't have a problem with writers making up fiction (that's what most writers too and it's the norm -as long as it's not documentary stuff or biographies-). What bothers me about this woman is that I think she's an opinionated dreamer. How can you be  in the sex industry for so long and come up with all that rubbish? Or say things like "woman are not objectified in porn" with a straight face? The title "The sex Myth" is a very pretentious title in a form of "grandeur". The book should have been called "Sex & lies in the media". Sorry, just my opinion.

"In the company of the Courtesan" - historical fiction but a nice read

"Secret diary of a manhattan call girl" - pretty frothy but more accurate than some

"sex tips from an escort" - good, although we know most of them already!  Author talks very candidly about her work and it's quite empowering

"the crimson petal and the white" - one of the main characters is a Victorian whore, as well as several of the minor characters.  And they had their own version of adultwork even then

I recently just finished reading "Indecent" and honestly couldn't put it down (I was up all last night finishing it). It's based in the US and while the author doesn't get into full on escorting, she takes you through her life working in peep shows, solo porn, massage parlours and strip clubs. She's incredibly frank and doesn't take any prisoners. None of that ridiculous glamorising of the industry. Highly recommended!

for those not in the know, (doctor) brooke de bunks news headlines and extortionate statistics by using academic, peer reviewed and thouroughly researched arguements. if you want to find out if what she's saying is 'total rubbish' everything is referenced in the bibliography at the back.

she is not claiming to be a 'sex expert' she introduces herslef as a statistical researcher, with an interest in sex. she also mentions in the book how she hates being referred to as a leading sex expert because she doesn't think she is!

the reason i suspect she has had horrible reviews for this book is because people dont like it when the truth isnt as sexual or sensational as they would like and it reveals that women, a majority of the time are in the driving seat of their lives.

the book most interestingly reveals the motivations of companys, newspapers etc behind the headlines and facts and figures and explains how they create public hype in terms of agenda setting and fitting the statistics around their opinions rather than the other way round. great critical thinking and has actually taught me alot in preperation for my third year of uni on how to question everything that is put in front of you.

dont know if you have seen louis theroux's documentaries about male porn stars? that will shed some light on the 'women not being objectified in porn'. but, i must note that i have not had any experience with porn so cannot say from personal experience. when it comes to opinions its important to question everything and be able to back it up with facts and not assumptions.

ps - why the 'bitter' rant?
