'prostitution is not a job'
« on: 23 May 2013, 09:54:20 pm »
While browsing the program for an event I may attend I noticed one of the exhibition titles was as above: 'prostitution is not a job'. I suppose this is referring to and setting itself against the sex workers rights slogan 'sex work is work'.

I guess I'm posting here because not only did I feel pissed off that people who have never been sex workers decide to make such an 'enlightening' exhibition, but I also feel a bit sad. If I attend the event I really don't have the energy to out myself and take on any arguments about prostitution/or the million and one misconceptions about sex work....not if it is with a bunch of prohibitionists.

I'm struggling with wether I want to attend at all, and if so do I choose to let this go or stab some one in the eye with my 'save us from our saviours' red umbrella badge? This evening I feel very tired of this crap.

Why don't you send them a statement with your day schedule (work times, client contacts -with likes and dislikes-, dangerous clients lists, touring dates, your websites, your advertising, your photographer-webdesigner invoices, your different budgets for X,Y and C, tax returns and mortgage etc...etc...etc..

Then have them tell you in the face that what you have is a "hobbie".

The suspense will kill me lol! as to what the event is?

Suspense set aside any reply has to be in context. Depends on who the actual audience will be as to the potential reply/argument?

Someone once wanted a quote that was a reaction to this sort of thing. My first response was that it should be "fuck off", and the second one was..

Quote
Article 23 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says that everyone has the right to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work, and the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of their interests.

There is no 'except for sex workers' in human rights. Such rights are particularly important to oppressed and marginalised groups.

The burden of proof is not upon sex workers to justify this: it is upon those who seek to refuse fundamental human rights to attempt to justify their bigotry. Every time sex workers' humanity is denied, it encourages violence and discrimination against them.

.. much the same as the first, but in a few more words :)

Feel free to send something like it (via an anonymous email?) to the organisers.
'The Ian formerly known as SW5'. What they said: "Indispensable", "You are our best resource", and (hours later!) "I'm afraid that you're being made redundant..."

Am loving article 23 - bloody brilliant shout!!!

Please do still inform as to the program organisers????  I am amazed in this day and age that such a 'backward' way of thinking is still out there?

thanks everyone for you replies and brilliant suggestions!! Loving the idea of an "admin" exhibition and article 23...wow, why have I never seen this?
The event is a small cultural festival in Europe, and yes it is weird, but sadly not uncommon that these attitudes exist - and in this case are being presented as a 'feminist' position.
I've writen to the organisers asking for some clarification on the content of the exhibition (tho I'm not sure how else the title might be interpreted?) and have mentioned I would NOT be supporting an event which was promoting material that was anti sexworkers rights/had a prohibition adgenda.
