It's a very good point but... we don't pay taxes because people think we're awesome, we pay taxes because they are the "fees" for living in a nice society where you probably aren't dying of the plague or living in a sewer or being kept in a harem, unless you perhaps decide to do those things for some reason.
The way we all look at each other in this country is pretty bloody negative. Mention the words "estate agent" or "cyclist" or "politician" to any person (choose the most likely to be effective
) and you'll get a two-hour tirade about how much that person doesn't enjoy sharing their country with those sorts of others. We have a very "What about ME and MY SACRIFICES?" attitude here and very little care or interest in looking after each other. There is less support for the NHS and the welfare system etc now, apparently, than there was during Thatcher's time. Nobody wants anything to do with anyone else!
That said, obviously there are certain groups who are marginalised to the extent that they suffer increased violence while being more likely to be ignored by police, and tend to work harder and cause less trouble than others while being pointed at by many as some sort of scourge of the world. These groups need things to change more than anyone else, and especially in the (very important) issue of prossies being actually allowed to work safely in groups, we need laws to change ASAP!
I don't think us short-changing public services and making things even more rubbish for the poor and underprivileged in society would really be part of taking steps in the right direction, though.
My personal dream is that prossies regularly go on strike until the laws and general societal understanding of us change - I'd like to see the country keep running smoothly without us!
