The rule is, don't contact clients unless they specifically ask you to. I have a couple of regulars that I know well that I contact, but that is all.

But, I don't mind clients asking me to contact them when I'm in town. But, I'll do it by email or text only, not phone. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't.

I've never had my ass handed to me after contacting a client about meeting up again. Usually they either don't respond, or worse...go along with making the appointment and beg you to come to their city, only to get there and they flake out.

I've put in my ads, "asking if I'm in your city is not enough info to make the trip!". It's like, I place an ad up to 'fish' for clients so I can start setting up appointments, and they are already asking, "are you in_______". Well, when will you be in _______? Umm...I just put the ad up. I haven't even gotten any clients set up to plan anything.
